Hotel La Fonda is a beautifully restored 19th century coaching inn, set in the main street of Arcos de la Frontera, the loveliest of the famous pueblos blancos. The hotel combines the carefully preserved architectural features of a bygone age with modern facilities. Wooden galleries overlook a traditional Andalusian courtyard and bedrooms are set along a handsome corridor, decorated with original hand-made tiles. Todays traveller steps into a building rich in local history. This charming 19-room hotel has been run by the same family for the last 60 years and been at the centre of Arcos commercial life since 1833. Here, merchants, bringing their wares from larger towns, would stay overnight, leaving their horses and wagons in the livery stables, set into a deep cave below the hotel. These same stables now house the excellent restaurant, where traditional Andalusian home cooking can be sampled: a wide range of dishes are available, all based on local produce and accompanied by the best of Spanish wines. The recent restoration, executed with great care, provides well appointed rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms and some with their own sun-terrace. Air-conditioning, heating, T.V. and telephone ensure modern comforts in rooms that still preserve their high-vaulted oak-beamed ceilings. These same rooms have witnessed the lives of the many artists and writers who have been drawn to the fairy-tale world of this Moorish town. Several of these, including the Scottish writer, Anita Richmond, stayed for long periods at the inn and details of their fascinating lives may be found in our information sheets. Arcos itself is an intriguing labyrinth of narrow streets and brilliantly white-washed houses, perched precariously on a high inland cliff. The town and the Fonda are perfectly situated as a base for touring the region. You can visit the historic cities of Cadiz, Sevilla and Jerez de la Frontera and enjoy the wild beauty of the Sierra de Grazalema, a national park containing the unique pre-historic pinsapo trees
